Neither of us slept very well so we are dragging. We arrived pretty well on time and the flight was uneventful. I think we are heading to cool and wet weather but are very excited about this adventure. We hope you Ontarions enjoy the fabulous fall wether this weekend. Hopefully we will be boarding in the next hour. Our flight is delayed so we are enjoying the ambiance of the gate lounge. Their website says how proud they are of the app. The only unpleasant aspect of our day so far is battling with Air Canada’s App which is next to useless and very tedious. We cleared security with no issues and “enjoyed “ a delicious chicken burger dinner. We are sorry that you had to battle the ugly traffic heading out of the airport on the way home. Thanks to Aly for driving us to the airport. We had dinner in a restaurant away from the tourist area and it was hopping with young locals out on dates or mostly meeting friends and colleagues after work on a Friday night. Who knew there were so many unusual forms these could take? We just window shopped. One that drew a lot of attention was “The Condomerie”.

The area was full of tourists and there were several attractive young ladies advertising their treats in the windows. We stumbled upon the red light district several times, the best time being after dark and after the rain. The sweet smell of dope is everywhere because of the number of cafés which are different from coffee shops because they serve more than coffee. The sidewalks are narrow to make way for the bicycle paths so it is a challenge walking especially with large puddles further complicating things. You need to be on your toes at all times here to safely avoid the horrendous number of bicycles which dominate this city, and are more likely to run you over than are cars. However since we only have 24 hours we are making the best of things. There are some definite themes in Amsterdam although today’s dominant theme was rain, rain and more rain.

All of the structures, including the railings will need to be laid down since the bridges will skim the deck. We enjoy the top deck while we can because it will be closed from next Tuesday to Sunday because the bridges are too low. We were treated to several great rainbows as compensation for all the rain.

We got a true appreciation for this by riding the top deck where only the tops of buildings are visible over the dikes. The Dutch are world-renowned for their water management expertise. They were built in the early 1700’s to pump water over the dikes to drain the lower areas that are several meters below the river level. It was very interesting to learn about how the windmills are built and run. The windmills are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

We visited windmills at Kinderdijk this morning and then spent the rest of the day cruising up stream. Another dreary day but according to our guide the rainy season here in Holland goes from January 1st to December 31st so apparently we missed the dry period.
